Volunteers

Bayer hosted their annual community service day on Friday, October 7, at the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden. Through a donation of $19,000 and more than 130 employee volunteers, Bayer showcased its commitment to supporting pollinator health and habitat development by assisting in the planting of over 2,000 wildflowers, shrubs, and trees, completing a garden path and helping create a mosaic art feature that will soon be embedded in a pathway near the Arboretum Gazebo.

Several times a year, the Friends of the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden invite members and the public to shop from one of the area’s largest selections of attractive, low-water, easy-care plants at their teaching nursery.

Over the course of four hours, dozens of short-term volunteers work to fulfill the needs of numerous new, experienced or even hesitant gardeners interested in finding the plants that look great and support our environment.

Staff from across the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden organization gathered together with our volunteers to fill in native grass plantings at our California native plant meadow. Located adjacent to the School of Veterinary Medicine’s new student services and administrative center – scheduled for completion in July 2016 – this area will also be home to an events lawn, café, restroom, as well as the future site of our pollinator and hummingbird demonstration gardens.

This year we recruited new volunteers for our regular gardening and land stewardship volunteer teams. They are currently in the process of gaining in-depth training on the care and maintenance of Arboretum and Public Garden landscapes.

Throughout November and December volunteers from student groups, community members, local Rotary Clubs as well as our long-term and loyal UC Davis Arboretum volunteers, have come out to the future site of the UC Davis California Native Plant GATEway Garden to help plant thousands of native grasses. We cannot thank them enough. Their investment in this educational and community resource is very much appreciated. We could not manage these large-scale improvements without their help.
