Student Job Opportunity: Newsletter Writer

Collaborate with a dynamic team of expert staff, student employees, and interns as a newsletter writer for the Arboretum and Public Garden's Learning by Leading™ program.

Position Overview

Position Details

  • Estimated Start Date: As early as May 2026
  • Salary: $17.40/hour
Time commitment
  • 5 to 12 hours per week
  • Occasional weekend work

Position Description

This student will assist all members of the Arboretum and Public Garden's Public Horticulture and Engagement team and will be responsible for the following:

  • Publicize the UC Davis’s Arboretum and Public Garden Learning by Leading™ newsletter, “A New Leaf”, to document and share community events/organizational updates for students, staff, alumni, and donors. This student newsletter is sent out on a biweekly basis.
  • Work with Outreach Leadership Program Manager and Arboretum Ambassador Photographer
  • Work efficiently with Mailchimp on a regular basis
  • Act as a liaison between student interns, apprentices, and program staff in the UC Davis Learning by Leading ™ internship program, and work to foster community within the program
  • Represent the Arboretum and Public Garden and the Learning by Leading™ program at campus outreach events throughout the year (i.e., UC Davis Leadership Giving Society Gala, Arboretum Plant Sales, etc.)
  • Assist in event planning and organizing (i.e., Picnic Day, Biodiversity Museum Day, Plant Sales)
  • Continue work on growing a Learning by Leading™ alumni network

Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Comfortable connecting with others to collect stories and content for the newsletter.
  • Lead collaborative efforts to organize Arboretum and Public Garden projects.
  • Manage administrative duties including email communications and scheduling meetings. 
  • Document and organize newsletter related documents within a constrained deadline.

Qualifications

  • Enjoys writing, proof reading and open and willing to implement feedback 
  • Experience working with Mailchimp or is willing to learn how to use Mailchimp
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Problem-solving skills to think ahead, establish work priorities, and resolve conflicts. 
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently. 
  • Experience with environmental communication and/or teaching in informal settings.
